Story

An Unfortunate Engagement is a short melancholic drama about two childhood friends
reuniting to find they no longer have anything in common.
Protagonist, Jared is a 24-year-old
businessman and soon-to-be married. During this pivotal time in his life, he begins to
reminisce, contacting his childhood friend Christian, a 24-year-old music student. The two
characters share an awkward dinner with nothing to talk about. The topic of their deceased
friend, Isaac, is continuously raised with this being something that makes Christian
uncomfortable. The main action of the story occurs at Jared’s engagement party which
Christian reluctantly attends. This serves to highlight just how different Christian and Jared’s
lives truly are. All of Jared’s corporate friends
contrast with Christian and his worn-down suit.
This culminates with Christian giving a speech
which fails to represent who Jared presently is
and is met with silence from the crowd.
The two meet again for a final time at a lake where their friend Isaac's ashes are scattered. They reminisce, both understanding that things
between them aren’t the same. They share a
final genuine laugh before parting ways.
"I used to be in a band. We played a handful of gigs, released a few tracks, then we grew up and moved on. Myself a little less so, going into acting, but the other guys went to law school, med school, got married, bought houses, and had kids.
When I first read the script it resonated deeply with me on a personal level. This was my life, my friends. We’re still close, thankfully. But we can never seem to shake that wistful nostalgia for our youth spent dreaming of being rockstars..."
